Best Brunches: Top Paddock

brunch at top paddock, richmond

Brunch originated in England in the late nineteenth century and gradually spread to the United States in the 1930s. Through time, however, the tradition has spread to what is now hailed as the brunch capital of the world.

Melbourne has made a serious name for itself when it comes to mastering the meal that fits between breakfast and lunch. Whilst it can seem an impossible task to choose a brunch spot from the myriad that continue to pop up all around, there is one that stands a head above the crowd: Top Paddock.

This Richmond gem really is the quintessential Melbourne brunch experience. It’s a foodie hotspot with a beautiful exterior combo of luscious greens and warm timber.

As you step through the doors, prepare for an all out assault on the senses. The team at Top Paddock have wholly embraced the designer trend of bringing the outdoors in. Plus, with the unpredictability of Melbourne weather, you can pretend you’re sitting out amongst nature whilst in truth you are inside hiding away from the alternating horizontal rain and scorching sun.

The white subway-tiled walls and timber accents in the light-filled open space are the Vance Joy of opening acts. The main act then appears and is full of colour and a wonderful mix of sweet, savoury, fluffy and crunchy.

We started with the Top Paddock: chorizo, pickled onion, peppers, basil, bacon, Adelaide green tomatoes, poached eggs & relish on toast and washed it down with an iced chocolate. Hands down this is the best iced choc on the market. It’s all ice cream, chocolate and milo-tasting goodness!

Since brunch is the best excuse for devouring all things sweet and savoury, we simply couldn’t go past the Blueberry & ricotta hotcake with berries, maple syrup, seeds & cream. They were light, fluffy, sweet and crunchy and tasted as good as they looked.

For those of you who fear you may plunge into a sugar-induced coma, there is something for you too. From cold pressed juices to kale and cauliflower salads, there is a foodie delight for every appetite.
